Camille Turner is a seasoned artist whose thought-provoking work challenges Canada’s national narratives through her innovative Afronautic methodology. Drawing from Afrofuturism, Camille’s artistic journey transcends boundaries, utilizing imagination as a tool for world-making, embracing nonlinearity in time, and recognizing silence as both information and direction

With over three decades of experience in the arts, Camille’s recent explorations delve into the untold stories of slave ships constructed on Canada’s eastern seaboard during the eighteenth century, all through the lens of her Afronautic framework. Her work has garnered recognition, including the prestigious Toronto Biennial Artist Prize in 2022 and acknowledgment from ARTnews as one of the most iconic works of the year.

Having recently earned her PhD, Camille’s research on the topic of slave ships formed the foundation of her dissertation, further establishing her expertise in the field of Afronautic exploration. Rooted in personal experiences of migration and displacement, Camille’s artistic journey reflects her deep inquiry into concepts of home, belonging, and the expansive nature of Black identity.

Through her captivating speaking engagements, Camille aims to challenge perceptions and inspire new ways of thinking, inviting audiences to explore the intersections of history, imagination, and identity through an Afronautic lens. Her upcoming exhibition, “Otherworld,” hosted at the University of Toronto’s Art Museum, promises to be a profound exploration of history and memory, guided by the principles of Afronautics.

Central to Camille’s message is the belief that knowledge, once revealed, cannot be ignored. By inviting audiences on a journey of discovery through her art and public speaking, she encourages reflection and dialogue on the complexities of our shared history, all while embracing the transformative power of Afronautic inquiry.

As Camille continues to push boundaries and provoke thought, her work serves as a testament to the boundless possibilities of imagination and the enduring relevance of Afronautic exploration in confronting uncomfortable truths and envisioning a more just and inclusive future.
