Workshops
Afronautic Research Lab Workshops are presented by Outerregion, a performance collective founded by Camille Turner. The group is composed of Camille Turner and her siblings, Karen, and Lee. In their workshops the group become afronautic space travellers guiding visitors into the depths of the archive of colonial Canada’s entanglement in the transatlantic slave trade through to its percussive effects in the present.
Prompted by clips from newspapers dated from the 18th century to the present, including “wanted” ads posted by Canadian slaveholders to offer rewards to recapture people who escaped their bondage, the Outerregion Collective take visitors into complex and under acknowledged histories of anti-Blackness and Black resistance. Their immersive workshops are tailored for artists, educators, students, and citizen researchers alike. Through this interactive experience participants learn Afronautic Research principles to explore silenced histories and embark on a journey of discovery and imagination.
